Summary: Skin cancer is unfortunately very common, but it can often times be removed with plastic surgery. If you have been diagnosed with cancer of the skin, cosmetic surgeons are here to help you.
The Most Common Type of Cancer
Cancer is an unfortunate part of our world today and many, many people suffer from the disease every year. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and the number of cases increase every year. There are many reasons for this, but there are also many solutions. If you have been told that you have skin cancer, a plastic surgeon may be able to help. The key is not to panic, and to collect as much information as you can.
Good News for Your Bad News
Most types of skin cancer can be removed by plastic surgeons, and if the cancer is small enough, the procedure can even be performed in your doctor’s office or an outpatient facility. Because a cosmetic surgeon is overseeing your procedure, any scarring you receive will be barely visible, or will be concealed within the natural folds of your skin. One of the many downsides to removing cancer is that oftentimes the scarring is large and obvious, but in the hands of a surgeon who is focused on aesthetics as well as your health, you may be able to come out of your procedure without anyone ever knowing you underwent this surgery.
Understanding Your Cancer
Knowledge is power, and with something as scary as cancer, the more you know the better off you are. There are 3 main types of skin cancer, and understanding your diagnosis will put you on the best path to recovery:
- Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, and it is also the least dangerous. It tends to grow slowly and rarely ever spreads to other areas of the body. This cancer can be easily removed with generally minimal scarring.
- Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most-common type of skin cancer. This type frequently appears on the face, lips or ears, and may sometimes spread to the lymph nodes or other closely related sites. Catching this cancer early is your best chance at a full recovery.
- Malignant melanoma is the least common form of skin cancer, but it is important to recognize that it is the most dangerous. If discovered early enough, it can be completely cured, but if it is not caught quickly it can spread to the rest of the body and become fatal. Watch for signs of cancer on your skin, especially if you are exposed to the sun a lot or frequently visit tanning salons.
