Summary: The Food and Drug Administration agrees that Juvederm fillers may be used for cheek augmentations. Read on to understand what these “yes votes” could mean for your aging face.

New Uses for an Old Favorite

Juvederm Voluma XC (Allergan) has always been an extremely popular facial filler. Injectables and fillers are most often used to smooth out the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but this isn’t all they’re good for. Fillers like Juvederm are being researched extensively and discoveries of other uses for the material are being made constantly. The newest use for Juvederm is for filling out and augmenting the appearance of your cheeks. It may not sound like a lot at first, but the results of this procedure can have a staggering impact on the youthfulness of your face.

Say Yay for the FDA

A panel for the Food and Drug Administration believes strongly that Juvederm will work wonders when it comes to plumping up your cheeks. If the process gets approved, Juvederm would be the first dermal filler in the United States that can be used specifically for deep injection for cheek augmentation. This corrects age-related volume problems in the mid-face and leaves patients looking more youthful. Juvederm is already a great anti-aging product for its use smoothing out wrinkles, but now with its ability to be used for cheek augmentations the product is really packing a punch.

Safety Is Always a Factor

While the FDA is deciding whether or not to officially approve Juvederm Voluma XC (Allergan) for cheek augmentations, they are looking over a lot of research and statistics from safety trials. The panel who suggested the product for this use deemed that the risks are low enough for approval. Some things to consider:

  • The most frequent negative side effects reported by subjects in the clinical trial were tenderness, swelling, and firmness at the injection site. These effects usually lasted 15 to 30 days in less than 1/4 of the subjects.
  • The FDA reviewers reported that that the above side effects seemed to decrease in subjects receiving touch-up and repeat treatments. More than half of subjects received the optional retreatment at the end of the follow up period, suggesting that they also felt that these side effects were worth the final results provided.
  • In the year 2012 nearly 2 million people underwent a soft tissue filler augmentation, representing a 205% increase in the procedure since 2000.

When the Food and Drug Administration attempts to approve a product for a non-traditional use they put the material through an extensive trial. If the FDA listens to the panel and approves Juvederm for cheek augmentation you can rest assured that it is because it passed all the necessary safety tests.

Camera Ready

As we age we lose volume and elasticity in our skin. This creates unsightly wrinkles and sagging which can unfortunately make us appear a lot older than we actually are. With products like Juvederm being tested for alternative uses, however, it is very possible that we may have found a new way to keep that youthful fullness. Added volume in your cheeks can give you a rounder, more beautiful look. Keep an eye out for more news on this exciting development!
