Summary: Knowing how to speed up your Botox results can help you plan when you’ll actually be able to see the fruits of your injections. It’s important for patients to have realistic expectations about what they can expect from any injectable, Botox included. Even still, it’s not uncommon for patients to be on a tight deadline when it comes to seeing results.
Is it Worth it to Speed Up Your Botox Results?
Knowing how to speed up your Botox results can really come in handy if you’ve got an important event coming up. Indeed, the entire concept of “emergency Botox” certainly is not new. Essentially, patients who want this type of quick-working procedure have a big event coming up in the next day or so. As a result, these patients decided to undergo Botox in order to clear up any wrinkles last minute.
Emergency Botox works in theory, but there are some drawbacks. The most prominent such drawback is simply that Botox doesn’t really work that quickly. This injectable needs time in your system to effect change–to get that muscle tension to release and for that release to be reflected in the wrinkles in your skin.
But a new study is suggesting that there might actually be something that patients can do to speed up their Botox results. Generally speaking, it can take anywhere between four and six days for your Botox results to start showing up. Sometimes it’s longer, sometimes it’s shorter. But if you’re getting your Botox at the last minute, you might not have six days (which, really, is a scheduling issue first and foremost). Knowing how to speed up your Botox results could help you make the most out of your emergency Botox sessions.
What Research Has Found
A recent study published by a group of researchers from Northwestern University in Chicago wanted to take this question head on. So they got a studied a group of patients who were undergoing Botox injections and added this little wrinkle:
- Half of the patients who received Botox were given a rigorous list of facial exercises to perform daily
- This group of patients spend four hours performing simple facial exercises and stretches
- After six months, the A and B groups were switched
- A total of 22 patients were examined during this study.
Essentially researchers were looking to see whether these facial exercises–including motions of scowling or raising the forehead–would speed up the appearance of Botox results. The findings of the study were quite surprising. Patients who did the facial exercises saw their results appear to manifest one to two days earlier than patients do did not do facial exercises.
The mechanism that causes the more rapid appearance of results is not entirely understood. However, the working theory is that the stretching and exercise of the muscles helps the neuromodulator molecules in Botox bind to those particular nerves more quickly.
Why Would You Need Fast Results?
Even though these facial exercises–four hours of them–can help you start to show your Botox results more quickly, the overall results are essentially the same after two weeks or so. And it’s important to note that even if you start to see results, that doesn’t mean you’ll see peak results any sooner.
That’s why, whether you’re looking forward to facial exercises or not, it’s nice to just give yourself a little extra time before getting your Botox injections in the first place.
That’s not always possible, of course. There are certainly times where you might not be able to predict when you need a Botox appointment. Maybe you just found out you have a job interview. Or you have an unexpected family get together. The problem is that Botox can cause bruising (among other uncommon complications), so great results can’t always be guaranteed, even if they’re likely.
As it stands now, it might take several weeks for you to see your peak results. And you are certainly best off giving yourself a couple of weeks lead time when scheduling your Botox for an important event.
But the reality is that people aren’t always that organized and aren’t always that logical. Which means that people are generally going to need emergency Botox injections every now and again. That’s why it’s important that cosmetic surgeons are looking into ways to improve the time it takes for results to become visible and noticeable.
These facial exercises might be only the first step. Certainly, if they prove to have viability (and the study is replicated), you might find some variation of them being recommended by your cosmetic surgeon or medical spa. But it’s doubtful this will be the last mechanism that cosmetic surgeons turn to help patients see their results more quickly. Only time will tell if knowing how to speed up your Botox results will lead to more satisfied patients in the future.
