Summary: Plastic surgery is a field that, worldwide, is thriving. But plastic surgery is not the be-all, end-all, and I think most plastic surgeons would actually agree with that. Rather, plastic surgery is one tool among many. Those other tools? They tend to come in the form of non surgical cosmetic surgery procedures. In fact, if you’re looking for results but you don’t want to go through with surgery, there are actually many non surgical procedures that offer excellent results—even if they aren’t as dramatic as their surgical counterparts.
Why Would You Want to Avoid Surgery?
There are many benefits of plastic surgery, but it’s not for everyone. Indeed, why would you want to avoid surgery, with all the benefits it could offer? Well, surgery is great for many people—but there are some limitations. After all, there are some who are simply too susceptible to complications and for whom the recovery will be too problematic. There are also patients for whom, frankly, plastic surgery is overkill. After all, these are procedures designed to produce bold—though natural-looking—results. A patient that is thirty years old simply hasn’t developed enough aging-related issues to warrant a facelift.
So there are some legitimate reasons to avoid plastic surgery. But there are also patients who simply do not like the idea of going under the knife—for any reason. And that’s understandable. Plastic surgery—or any type of surgery—can be an intimidating prospect. There’s anesthesia involved, a long recovery, and a decent amount of pain. For many patients, this is all worth it—but not for everyone (I know I keep saying that, but I am trying to emphasize it for a reason). The end result is that plastic surgery simply is too intense for some patients. But those patients still want to look more youthful.
The solution comes in the form of non surgical alternative procedures. These procedures are designed to satisfy the same demands as some surgical procedures, but they are performed without any actual surgery. This means that recovery is much less intense and while the results are less bold, there’s something to be said for the subtlety of a nonsurgical approach. So what are these non surgical procedures that can help you get the results you want from surgery? Well, let’s take a look at them, though I will again caution this: these procedures can’t match the results of plastic surgery. That doesn’t mean, however, that the results aren’t great.
Instead of a Facelift, Try Botox
Botox and injectable fillers are both great for helping your face look more youthful and more vibrant. Botox works by numbing certain muscle groups responsible for deep wrinkles. Injectable fillers, such as Juvederm or Restylane, work by filling volume in the face. Both of these options work on different wrinkle causes, so you’ll definitely want to discuss your options with your cosmetic surgeon. Either one you go with, whether it’s Botox in Minneapolis or Juvederm in Dallas, the results will be temporary. So if you like what you see, you’ll have to get regular maintenance injections. But that’s a small price to pay for avoiding the long recovery period associated with a facelift for many patients.
Instead of Liposuction, Try CoolSculpting
Liposuction is usually a minimally invasive procedure, but it can still lead to a great deal of pain during recovery. One alternative is a procedure called CoolSculpting, which uses a special machine to, essentially, freeze your fat—thereby eliminating it. Fat, after all, is much less resistant to cold than your skin is. A suction device pulls fat into close contact with the skin, then the cold eliminates the fat. There is no surgery involved and only minimal discomfort. The extreme cold actually numbs the skin. In most cases, Coolsculpting will take several weeks to show results, and those results will be subtle. But if you want to avoid surgery, it’s a great option to take a little bit of fat off your belly.
Instead of Rhinoplasty, Try a Non Surgical Nose Job
Many patients want to change the size and shape of their noses. Often, this involves complex surgery. Recovery can be measured in a matter of weeks, and while that isn’t necessarily bad, it can be somewhat painful. A non surgical procedure called non surgical nose job is an alternative for some patients—especially those patients who want to add volume to the nose. These procedures use dermal fillers to increase the volume of the nose in strategic areas, thereby producing the illusion of actually changing the nose. There is no recovery time and most patients see results right away. There are definite advantages.
Sometimes, Surgery Will Still Be the Best Option
To be sure, if you want dramatic or permanent results, plastic surgery is generally going to be your best option. And plastic surgeons have made significant progress in both minimizing invasiveness and discomfort. However, for some patients, non surgical procedures will always be more preferable. We’re just happy those patients have so many great options.
