Now, I’m not suggesting that every time you look at your phone your skin is going to look a little more saggy. But the effect does build up over time—a long time. We’re talking years. But it might accelerate a process that is already naturally occurring. In fact, many patients have gone in to see their plastic surgeons because of this “phone face” phenomenon.

How Do You Get Rid of Excess Skin Around the Neck and Jowls?

There are two basic approaches to getting rid of excess skin around the neck and jowls: surgical and non surgical. That’s not uncommon in today’s plastic surgery landscape. There are tradeoffs for each approach, but they certainly grant patients a wide variety of options—and those options mean even more patients can get the results they want.

Non Surgical Approaches

Most non surgical approaches to treating sagging neck and jowl tissues center around tightening the skin. In some cases, adding volume to the cheek can help. So, if you want to get rid of jowls and loose skin around the neck, here are your options:

  • Juvederm: Injectables such as Juvederm can add volume to the face. In some cases, the added volume is enough to position the skin back in a more flattering position.
  • Ultherapy: This directed energy device actually uses soundwaves (high-intensity soundwaves) to tighten skin and make you look a little more athletic
  • Thermitight and Thermage: Both of these devices use thermal energy (that is, heat) to make your skin look tighter.

Most of these procedures require only minimal downtime. With something like Juvederm, you can usually pick up your normal activities right away. However, with something like Ultherapy or Thermitight, you might be letting your skin recover for a couple of days. That minimal downtime (and minimal discomfort) is appealing ot many patients.

However, the drawback to these procedures is that the results will be somewhat subtle. There are some patients who will, unfortunately, see no results because they aren’t a good fit for the technique. With others, the results will be quite difficult to spot. Depending on your desired outcome, that might be ideal.

Surgical Options

But for patients who want bigger, bold results, surgery might be the best possible option. There are a couple of surgical procedures designed to minimize the appearance of sagging skin around the neck and around the jawline. Likely, you’ve heard of these procedures before:

  • Facelift: While usually associated with eliminating lines and wrinkles around the upper face, a facelift procedure is also widely used in order to make the jawline look a little more athletic. A facelift allows surgeons to remove excess skin and reposition some of the tissues within the face. The end result is the mitigation of lines and wrinkles, but also tighter looking skin throughout the face that looks a little more youthful.
  • Neck Lift: While not quite as popular as its face orientated relative, Neck Lift is a widely performed procedure that is designed to eliminate lines, wrinkles, and excess skin around the neck. This leaves the neck looking smoother and more youthful. And it also eliminates that sagging neck skin that can lead to, for example, the “turkey neck” that many people dread developing.

Both surgical procedures do require a recovery period, so you might be off your feet (or at least miss work) for a few days to a couple of weeks after the procedure (much depends on the extent of work you want performed). However, these surgical procedures are the likely the best way to achieve permanent, bold results.

Treatment that Fits Your Lifestyle

Ultimately, you’ll want to find a treatment that fits your lifestyle and your daily routine. The best way to find out what that is might be to talk to your plastic surgeon about what, exactly, you want to accomplish. There are many routes you can take to treat your sagging neck and jowls, but there’s only one route that’s right for you.
